Lot Essay

William Lowndes, Secretary to the Treaury in 1695, was so esteemed by Queen Anne that she bestowed upon him the title of Office of Auditor of the Land Revenue for life, in reversion to his sons. Little did the Queen know how many sons that would be- he was married four times and had eighteen children. The present example was made for one of these descendents. See D.S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, p. 348.
