John Roberts of Bonington was made a director of the East India Company in 1764, eventually rising to Deputy Chairman and then Chairman. The service may have marked his retirement as a director of the Company, according to D.S. Howard (Chinese Armorial Porcelain, vol. I, p. 976) Earlier Roberts had ordered an enamelled tea service (ibid, p. 664) and a blue-bordered dinner service (ibid, p. 717.)
