From 1901 on, after a short study period with Jacob Maris, he produces numerous prints, depicting city views and animals. After Maris' death in 1899 Boon will continue his lessons with Cor Koppenol, at the same time studying at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in The Hague. After his studies Boon moves several times within the Netherlands until in 1922 he moves to Traunkirchen in Austria, where he will stay for a few years (see lot 399). In commission of the Amsterdamsche Superfosfaatfabriek Boon makes many watercolours of fruits and vegetables from 1930 onwards. Besides his prints and watercolours the artist remains known for his portraits, still lifes, landscapes and city views. His paintings are carefully composed, with a subtle use of colour. Work by Jan Boon seldomly appears at auction.
