Lot Essay

Related to the figure in the fresco of Saints Mark and John the Evangelist on the vault of the Cappella del Crocifisso in San Marcello al Corso, Rome. The fresco was painted before Perino's departure from Rome in 1527. The pair of Evangelists on the other side, Saints Luke and Matthew, were completed by Daniele de Volterra under Perino's supervision after his return from Genoa in 1539. There is a preliminary drawing for both Evangelists at Windsor, and a study for Saint Mark in the Albertina (E. Parma, Perino del Vaga: tra Raffaello e Michelangelo, exhib. cat., Mantua, Palazzo Te, 2001, no. 59).
