Lot Essay
Albert Goodwin met John Ruskin in 1869, and it was Ruskin that completed Goodwin's education. In the spring of 1871, Goodwin stayed with Ruskin at Abingdon and together they painted some of Ruskin's favourite views. A letter from Ruskin to Goodwin, dated Abingdon 19 March 1871, reads:
'Dear Mr Goodwin,
I should have written before but was not able to tell you anything certain of my plans, the state of the Continent being still troubled. I find it will be necessary to delay Verona for a little while, but it cannot be for long, and meantime I want you to come and help me here, where I think you will find much pleasure, and do great good. I want you to come back with me on the 9th or 10th of next month here, and to stay with me at a nice country inn about which I find the loveliest subjects; but I cannot paint them unless you are able to come. Also I have a great many questions to ask you, and arrangements to consult you about, and I will give you what price you think right for your drawings as fast as you can make them, and you will get used to me a little before we start for Verona.
Send me a line here to "Crown and Thistle", Abingdon, Berks, to say if you can come back with me.
Ever affectionately yours,
John Ruskin.'
