Lot Essay

The Romanesque Cathedral of San Martino was built in 1063 under the guidance of Bishop Anselm (later Pope Alexander II). The west front was built in 1204 by 'Guidetto' (Guido Bigarellli of Como) and consists of a vast portico of three magnificent arches. The nave and transepts were rebuilt in Gothic style in the 14th century.
