Lot Essay

Goodwin appreciated the freshness of colour that Naples and its surroundings lent him, however he did not always appreciate the weather:

'My day at Naples was not my idea of perfect Neapolitan weather, but why should I paint the grey murkiness, when I know what a blue day means over the sea with the tragic mountains topping everything.' (Diary, 1909).
