Lot Essay

'Sun and blue again! most welcome after the yellow desert fog. Painted on balcony - Cairo work - glad to find I can remember enough to bring back a little memory of some of the afterglows over the Citadel and hill. I think the afterglow here in Egypt is the one unique thing which we only see now and again in England. Often a quite ordinary pale sunset will have an astonishingly brilliant afterglow'. (Diary, February 1909).
