Lot Essay

Located on Lake Maggiore, the town of Pallanza, of Roman origin, has an English-style botanical garden at the Villa Taranto that boasts more than 20,000 different species of plants and trees.

'We have been away three weeks last Friday, and it has been good to get face to face with nature; and such nature the shore of Lago Maggiore has to show; soul-satisfying. It is good to find and see with one's eyes a country that needs no idealization, but is beautiful at every turn.' (Diary, 16th May, 1909).
