Lot Essay

This is after the picture in the collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein, Vienna. The sitter is Rubens' eldest child by Isabella Brant, Clara Serena Rubens, who was born in 1611 and died young aged 1623. The Liechtenstein portrait is thought, on the basis of the sitter's apparent age, to date from circa 1614/6 and is first recorded in the house of his father-in-law, Jan Brant, in 1639.
