The Calling of Samuel
With inscription by the 2nd Earl of Eldon 'The Calling of Samuel. From Sir Joshua Reynolds./This is a copy taken for me in 1840 by H.P. Briggs Esq. R.A., of the picture entitled the Calling of Samuel, which was painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds and is now in the/National Gallery, and was considered by the late Lord Chancellor Eldon and by several members of his family to be a very strong likeness of his eldest son John,/my Father, who was born March 8th 1774 and died Decer 24th 1805. It has been supposed, but erroneously, that my Father sat when a child to Sir Joshua/Reynolds for the picture. Sir Joshua Reynolds was born in 1723, and died Febry 23rd 1792./Eldon. 1840.' (on the reverse)

Lot Essay

After the original in the Tate. At the time the present work was commissioned, the original hung in the National Gallery, but was transferred to the Tate in 1919.
