Lot Essay

This sideboard-table form, conjoined with commode-pedestals and capped by hollow-sided urn plinths, relates to a pattern published in 1810 in R. Ackermanns, Repository of Arts. The Egyptian ornament of sunbursts, leopard-heads and vestal hermed and sarcophagus-scrolled pilasters evokes the famed Egyptian hall of antiquity, while also reflecting the interest in Egypt antiquities revived in the late 18th century following Admiral Nelson's victory at the battle of the Nile. Ackermann's pattern, which also featured the leopard-headed drawers, commemorated Nelson and was for a Trafalgar patent sideboard.
