The rectangular back with reeded edge, above scrolled arms headed by brass rosettes and joined by a reeded frieze, on tapering reeded legs with brass caps and castors, the padded back, arms, seat and squab cushion covered in red and pale gold material, previously sprung

Lot Essay

This robust bergere, with Grecian lyre-scrolled frame enriched with reeds and sunflowered paterae, relates to rosewood library 'easy chairs' supplied by Gillows in 1813 for Hackwood Park, Hampshire. A pair of these chairs by Gillows was sold in the Hackwood Park house sale, Christie's, 20 April 1998, lot 55.
