Lot Essay

Two armed soldiers from the Corps d'Afrique guard two-wheeled ordnance wagons on the wharf at City Point, Virginia which became the busiest port in the world during this crucial final year of the U.S. Civil War. Another print of this image is known to exist in the Gilman Paper Company Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
