Lot Essay
The following is a description as it apperaed in The Sphere; 'Two flags in the Atlantic; The United Patrol by the units of the British and U.S. Navies; Out on the wintry Atlantic, an American cruiser passes a British destroyer at the edge of their respective beats- from a painting specially done for The Sphere by Montague Dawson.'
'"The United States is now, unitedly and wholeheartedly, in the war with us...." So said the Prime Minister in his momentous broadcast on February 15. And so it is, in fact! So far as the Fleets of the two nations are concerned, so it has been for a long time. Far out in the Atlantic, for a good while past the two Fleets have been co-operating in the vital task of keeping the life-line of the democracies intact. The drawing by Mr. Montague Dawson above typifies this aspect of the war to-day. The British destroyer in the foreground is one of the Tribal class; this is a vessel of 1,870 tons. with a speed of 36 knots; she carries eight 4.7 guns and seven samller ones. The American cruiser behind is the Augusta (9.050 tons), of the Northampton class; she carries nine 8-in. guns and four 5-in. guns; she has a speed of 32 knots and a radius of 13,000 miles.'
'On left (from left to right)-1. Signalmen on a British destroyer flashing a message to an American patrol vessel. 2. Signals are exchanged between the American and British destroyers. 3. Led by the senior U.S. escort ship, the Convoy approaches to be taken over by vessels of the Royal Navy.'
