Lot Essay

Sir William Blake Richmond was the son of the portrait painter and watercolourist George Richmond R.A. (1809-1896). Like his father he was both a portraitist and a painter of subject pictures. George Richmond studied at the Royal Academy Schools where he formed a life-long friendship with Samuel Palmer (1805-1881). They were part of a group called 'The Ancients' who were followers of William Blake (1757-1827).
