Lot Essay

Sir Joseph Noel Paton's depiction of the Cawnpore massacre emphasises the strength of the British family unit in the face of suffering. The children cling to their mother as she looks heavenward with a Bible in her hand. The original painting was sold at Sotheby's, London, 21 November 1989, lot 24.
