Lot Essay

These two paintings by Solomon were first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1854. The luxury of first class travel and romantic affection is put into sharp relief by the second scene in which a boy prepares to depart for Australia in the hope of sending money home to his ailing family. The original painting of First Class, The Meeting is in a private collection and Second Class, The Parting is in The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
