Lot Essay

The ceremony of 'Beating the Bounds' is conducted on Ascension Day, which is celebrated on the fortieth day after Easter. This custom, which began in 1498, is the traditional way of making sure that the Parish boundaries are remembered, it involves a robed procession around the city. This ceremony is still observed in at least two parishes in Oxford, St Mary the Virgin and St Michael at the North Gate. During this march, the procession halts by certain trees, fences and walls that denote the boundary of a particular area. The Parish of St Mary the Virgin runs through University College, Oxford.

Estella Canziani, neé Louisa Starr, is most well-known for her picture A Fairy Tale which became a best selling print in Victorian times. The star with which the picture is inscribed is one of several monograms which she used in place of, or in addition to, her signature and is a reference to her maiden name.
