Lot Essay

The small resort town of Newport lies between Fishguard and Cardigan on the Pembrokeshire coast. After spending the summer of 1881 in Cornwall, Brett chose to return to Wales the following year. This is one of several views of the coast he painted that summer, and retains its original frame, the pattern of which is distinctive to the artist.
