LEGENDARY YQUEM
Lying in Twickenham, Middlesex (EHD)
Unquestionably the greatest-ever Sauternes vintage. Sauternes was well-liked by the Polish and Russian courts and aristocracy, and it was this wine that smashed all records when, in 1859, the Grand Duke Constantine, the brother of the Tsar, paid 20,000 francs for a 900-litre tun of the 1847 Yquem.

Tasting note: At the great Yquem tasting in 1998 an attractive amber-gold; overpoweringly sweet nose; immensely sweet, fabulous flavour, incredible finish. Most recently, a superb bottle with short gold capsule and original cork: faultless bouquet, harmonious, glorious evolution in the glass; very rich, excellent flavour, perfect acidity length and finish. Last tasted at Wilfred Jaeger's remarkable pre-phylloxera Bordeaux tasting, June 2001 ******! M. B.
