Lot Essay

Dewa Nyoman Lepèr was born in Padangtega (Bali) in 1917. Pupil of Anak Agung Gde Sobrat he was a member of the Ubud Painter Group and stood in close contact with the former members of the Pita Maha artists' association. Western artists like Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies helped their fellow artists on Bali by organizing exhibitions and selling their works. This is why the present lot has probably been titled by Bonnet on the reverse. Totally deaf, Lepèr did not start to paint but after the Second World War, taking his subjects only from Hindu tales. He had a one man exhibition in Sydney, Australia in 1974.
