FIRST EDITION of Charles Estienne's book on horticulture, written primarily for children, and cataloguing and describing plants and trees in Latin with succinct translations in French. This is the second of several books by Charles Estienne of which Schreiber, The Estiennes, no.50, says 'These may be regarded as the first children's books, i.e. the first books produced specifically for the entertainment (unlike school-books) as well as the edification of a juvenile readership - as the last five words of the title clearly state'. Renouard 41/5; not in Adams.
