Title printed in red and black and with a woodcut device (occasional light discolouration). 19th-century sheep, red lettering piece on spine (rubbed). Provenance: F. Samberger (early signature on title-verso) -- H. Hofsnider (18th-century signature at foot of title) -- Bibliotheca Acad. Georgiae, Augsburg (library stamp on title-verso) -- Bibl. Gott. Second edition - the rare first appeared in 1658 - of probably the first work dedicated to butter, with chapters on its etymology and history (from Greek and Hebrew times), its colour, medical properties, etc. The second part deals with cheese and some people's aversion to it, perhaps the first work on milk and dairy allergies. The author, a Dutch schoolmaster, for some time was the resident historian and counsellor at the court of the Elector of Brandenburg. His other works include treatises on beer, herrings, truffles and tulips. Vicaire 776; Bitting p.422.
