Lot Essay

Konpirasan is a shrine on Mount Zozusan in Kagawa prefecture on the island of Shikoku. It is also the name of the Shinto deity who is the patron saint of sailors and travelers. Hakuin and his followers produced many scrolls reading Konpira or Akiba as talismans to prevent disaster and secure peace (see also lots 62 and 63).
