Lot Essay

Some scholars think that Sosetsu was Sotatsu's brother or son: his life is a mystery. Only a few things are known - he inherited Sotatsu's fan shop the "Tawaraya," and used Sotatsu's Inen seal on his paintings. He was using the title of Hokkyo by 1642 and in the same year became an official painter of Kaga Province.

For other paintings by Sosetsu using the same signature and seal in the Kyoto National Museum, see Kobayashi Tadashi., ed., Rinpa 2 - Kacho 2/Rimpa Painting Volume 2 - Seasonal Flowering Plants and Birds (Kyoto: Shikosha, 1990), pl. 291.
