A panoramic view of scenes in the Higashiyama or eastern hills of the old capital of Kyoto is shown in fascinating detail on this screen. Many of the temples and shrines can be identified. Hokoku Shrine, the mausolem for Hideyoshi and the Hall of the Great Buddha (Daibutsuden) appear at the far right. Kiyomizu Temple is at the top of the third panel from the right, followed by Yasaka pagoda and Gion Shrine. At the far left are the imperial palace, and the Kamo Shrine and horse races. At the center, spectators throng to view the towering floats of the summer Gion festival.
