A Suit of Armor with a Russet-Iron SolidiPlate Do and a Saiga-Style Helmet
Edo period (17th-18th century)
Laced in dark blue with components lacquered russet-brown, comprising a modified Saiga-style oki tenugui russet-iron helmet with six plates joined with bold standing rivets, the space above the peak embossed with eyebrows, the bowl mounted with a single-lame solid-iron neck guard with large turnbacks resembling wings, pierced with circular openings and lacquered gold, the sides of the helmet mounted with plates covering the temples in typical Saiga design and decorated with applied iron florets on the sides of the bowl; the facemask lacquered russet-brown with a hinged nose plate and an applied boar's fur moustache and chin tuft, fitted with a four-lame throat guard; the do hinged at the side and constructed of five vertical iron plates and applied with a russet-iron and shakudo dragon with gold eyes, holding a Buddhist ken in clouds, the design running around the right side to the back of the do, the reverse mounted with a gilt-metal ring, the muna-ita and shoulder straps lacquered black and trimmed with a "rope" rim, the front of the do with three distinct dents sustained from matchlock fire, fitted with seven sections of five-lame tassets, the bottom lame pierced at the corners with inome; chu-sode; sleeves chain mail with rectagonal iron plates with florets and spikes on the upper arm and forearm and overlapping iron scales on the elbows and wrists; thigh guards iron plates applied with florets; splint shin guards; one storage box; no stand
