An Insect-Cage Incense Burner (Mushikago goro)
Meiji period (late 19th-early 20th century), signed Tetsunao saku
Designed in bronze, gold and silver with shakudo, the domed cage silver with a sliding door on one side and surmounted by a silver plate pierce-carved with a phoenix in clouds, the removable incense cup with a pierced cover with autumn foliage and applied with metal insects, the base with four bracket feet and carved on the surface with grasses and the area around the rim carved with gourds and vines all inlaid with gold, the entire base patinated shakudo, a gilt-silver rim set into the base carved with flowers and leaves floating on a stream
