Lot Essay

Adolf Breetvelt left The Hague, where he had attended the 'Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten', to settle in Indonesia in 1920. In 1938 he returned to The Netherlands and moved to Amsterdam to dedicate himself fully to his artistic career. His figurative style became more and more surrealistic, resulting in abstraction around 1947. Breetvelt was a member of 'Vrij Beelden' and 'Liga Nieuwe Beelden'.
