Lot Essay

Rolph Scarlett was a self-taught artist from a family of jewellers who settled in New York in 1918. Solomon Guggenheim purchased many of his 'non-objective' paintings as Scarlett preferred to describe them, explaining that the forms were not abstracted from anything. Scarlett was an avant-garde abstract painter, an innovative set designer and the creator of sculptural jewellery.
