Lot Essay
From 1945 to 1950 Herbert Zangs studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. During this time he became acquainted with Günther Grass and Joseph Beuys. In the 1950's Zangs started to travel across Europe, Algeria, Egypt and Morocco. Later to Russia, Japan and the USA. During these travels arose umpteen paintings and watercolours, also called "Reise bilder". Collages and reliefs became his specialties and in 1952 originated the world famous "Verweissungen", followed by the works made with wind screen wipers: "Scheibenwischer". Besides his abstract works, Zangs also made expressionistic-figurative paintings. From the middle 1960's Zangs traveled several times to Paris. In 1975 he took part in the Documenta 6 in Kassel, with work which now can be seen in the Museum Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin.
