Lot Essay

The firm of Jennens & Bettridge (fl. 1815-1864) were reputed for their manufacture of highly skilled papier-maché wares. Orginally based in Birmingham, they took over Henry Clay's workshops in 1816. They opened a shop in London in 1837 and offices in Paris and New York two years later. Jennens & Bettridge served as 'Japanners in Ordinary' to George IV and exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition.
