Das Gemälde 'Frau im Garten' von Cuno Amiet ist im Jahre 1911 entstanden. Die obere Bildhälfte wird von einer nach vorne gebeugten Frau in einem roten Kleid dominiert. Ihre Aufmerksamkeit gilt der vom Rest des Gartens abgetrennten Pflanzstelle, wo sich bereits die ersten Pflanzensprösslinge durch das Braun der Erde gebahnt haben.
Trotz der starken Farben wirkt das Bild ruhig und ausgewogen. Dies entspringt der Auffassung Amiets, nach welcher die Farbharmonie eines Gemäldes in der Gesamtheit bewahrt werden muss: Jede Steigerung oder Änderung der Farbe eines natürlichen Gegenstandes bedingt wiederum kompositorische Änderungen, damit Harmonie und Gleichgewicht des Ganzen erhalten bleiben.

This reflects Amiet's notion that the harmony of colours in a painting has to be maintained in its totality: Any augmentation or alteration of the colours of a natural object requires a compositional modification in order to preserve the harmony and the balance of the whole.
