Lot Essay

Born in Kilgratson, Perthsire, Grant established one of the most successful and fashionable portrait practices in England following the success of his portrait of 'Queen Victoria and Melbourne Riding in Windsor Park' in 1840. His sitters included Prince Albert, the Duke of Devonshire, Benjamin Disraeli MP, and Palmerston. He was knighted and elected President of the Royal Academy in 1866.
