PARETO, Vilfredo (1848-1923). Cours d'économie politique. Lausanne: F. Rouge, 1896-97. 2 volumes in one, 8°. (Title lightly spotted, light marginal spotting or light soiling). Contemporary half vellum, flat spine lettered and decorated in black (spine very lightly discoloured, extremities lightly rubbed).
FIRST EDITION of Pareto's first major work. Pareto was one of the leaders of the Lausanne School and an illustrious member of the 'second generation' of the Neoclassical revolution. The Cours d'économie politique contains his famous 'law' of income distribution, a complicated mathematical formulation in which Pareto attempted to prove that the distribution of incomes and wealth in society is not random and that a consistent pattern appears throughout history, in all parts of the world and in all societies. Einaudi 4294.
