Lot Essay

Compare the similar dish illustrated by J. Ayers, Chinese Ceramics, The Koger Collection, London, 1985, p. 172, no. 144, and later sold in these rooms, 19 September 2006, lot 356, from the collection of Ira and Nancy Koger. In the catalogue notes for this dish, Ayers, p. 172, suggests that "this dish is part of an imperial dragon service, continuing a style instituted under the Ming, although the colour is relatively new". A dish of identical size was included in the exhibition catalogue, The Wonders of the Potter's Palette, Qing Ceramics from the Collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1984, p. 74, 36.

For further examples, see also the dish from the Tsui Art Foundation illustrated in Gems of Chinese Art, Singapore, 1992, no. 119; another example in Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, 1998, no. 224; and a pair of dishes from the Zhuyuetang Collection illustrated in Shimmering Colours: Monochromes of the Yuan to Qing Periods, Hong Kong, 2005, p. 238, no. 160.
