After serving in the Grenadier Guards he became a professional photographer in 1962. He undertook editorial work, particularly for Life and Queen Magazine, prior to being summoned by Diana Vreeland and given a five year contract with American Vogue. Advertising commissions followed, notably for Burberry and Olympus Cameras, in whose advertisements he also regularly featured. In 1981 he was appointed official photographer at the wedding of his cousin, The Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer. In recent years, Lord Lichfield was engaged in both photographic and ambassadorial roles for The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and the British Tourist Authority. In addition, he fulfilled many and varied commissions on location worldwide and at his studios in West London. Lord Lichfield produced a number of photographic books throughout his career and made regular television appearances, most recently promoting digital photography of which he was a pioneer. In 2002, The National Portrait Gallery dedicated a retrospective exhibition to the first twenty years of his work. Lord Lichfield was a Founder Editor of the Courvoisier Book of the Best, drawing upon his worldwide knowledge and experience of hotels and restaurants. He himself had interests in many restaurants over the years, the most recent venture being in partnership with his cousin Viscount Linley. He was closely involved in the production of Lichfield Gin in co-operation with William Grant & Sons. He had homes in London and Mustique, but his family seat was Shugborough in Staffordshire. Guests always remarked upon the exceptional standard of food and wine served by their most generous and entertaining host. He derived enormous pleasure from establishing and building up a much-admired cellar at Shugborough for the enjoyment of his friends. His knowledge of wine and good food was widely respected. Lord Lichfield died suddenly in November 2005.
