Lot Essay

The quality and character of an etching can vary significantly between different impressions, depending on the way the printer has inked and wiped the plate. Tissot took this part of the printmaking process very seriously, and the effects of plate tone, or retroussage, and selective wiping mattered greatly to him. He did not approve of all impressions and thought some impressions more successful than others. As Jane Abdy wrote 'it is thought that Tissot signed in pencil those copies which he considered to be most successful' (quoted from: J.J. Tissot, Etchings, drypoints and mezzotints, Frederick Mulder and Bury Street Gallery (catalogue 8), London, 1981).
