Lot Essay

One of Mêne's most famous groups, l'Accolade, composed of an Arab mare and stallion, was first exhibited as a wax in 1852, then again as bronze at 1853 Salon, and eventually won a medal at the Exposition universelle in 1855. Capitalising on the success of the work, Mêne went on to adapt both the stallion and mare as individual models. The mare was used in both Jument arabe avec harnachement and Cheval de spahi au piquet.
