Lot Essay

Yin Jun was born in 1974 in the Sichuan Province. Yin has recently come into prominence with several solo and group exhibitions in Beijing, Amsterdam and London showing his series of works portraying crying Chinese children. While these works are fairly simple in composition and construction, they are quite bold in their presentation

Yin's painting falls under the category of Cynical Realism, a style made famous by other Chinese artists such as Fang Lijun and Yue Minjun. In contrast to Fang Lijun and Yue Minjun's work, which is dependent on the irony of laughing faces and outlandish smiles, Yin Jun investigates the tear and exposes the anguish at the heart of both Chinese child's soul post Cultural Revolution.
