Lot Essay

The distinctive marquetry decoration of this commode is clearly inspired by French and Dutch cabinetmakers but shows also the characteristic design of Philipp Ferdinand Ludwig Batscher (1749-1823) Bartscher was appointed Hofmaler und Möbelfabrikant in Rietberg, Germany. The decorative scheme of this commode, using stylized Louis XVI elements like the floral urn, paterae and laurel garland are typical of Bartscher's commodes. For related commodes see S. Baumeier ao., Feine Möbel aus Westfalen, Heidelberg, 2003, p. 151 and p. 153.
