Lot Essay
The small scale and restrained design of this marble panel possibly points to a Neapolitan origin. A related small-scale panel in the Church of S. Teresa degli Studi, Naples and attributed to a Neapolitan workshop, is illustrated in A.M. Giusti, Pietre Dure, London, 1992, p. 225, fig. 82. A further related table, with similar central oval cartouche framed by strapwork, and possibly originally acquired by John, Lord Lumley (d. 1609) for Nonesuch Palace, was sold Christie's, London, 5 July 2001, lot 34.
