THE FOLLOWING LOTS 33 TO 40 RELATE TO THE CAREER OF MANCHESTER UNITED, ASTON VILLA AND ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL JOHN GIDMAN Born in Liverpool in 1954, John Gidman first signed for his home town club but was soon released in the summer of 1970 to Aston Villa. Seven years later Gidman had become an establised first-team player helping Villa defeat Everton 3-2 in the 1977 League Cup Final, Second Replay. In the same year Gidman also received his first international cap against Luxembourg. At the start of the 1979 season Gidman left Villa Park to play for Everton. Two years later he moved to Old Trafford as Ron Atkinson's first signing for £450,000. His career for United was plagued by injuries, however he helped a ten man United defeat Everton in the 1985 F.A. Cup Final. After United, Gidman played for a number of other teams including Manchester City, Stoke City and Darlington.

Lot Essay

In the above F.A. Cup Final played on 18th May 1985 at Wembley, Manchester United defeated Everton 1-0. In the 78th minute, referee Peter Willis sent off Kevin Moran for his challenge on Peter Reid, making Moran the first player ever to be sent off in an F.A. Cup Final. Reduced to ten men, United took Everton to extra time when Norman Whiteside scored in the 110th minute. After this, Everton mounted increasing pressure to equalize, but the United defence of Gidman, McGrath, Stapleton and Albiston held out to produce, as Ron Atkinson stated "arguably the best Cup win any side will have at Wembley".
