8o (205 x 129 mm). Half-title. Contemporary tree sheep (joints skilfully repaired). Provenance: J. Perrault (ownership inscription "Received payment 7/6, 27 September 1820, J Perrault, Agent" on front free endpaper; Edward Eberstadt's note on front paste-down: "Publisher's Agent, Mss. Copy with his notice of receipt of payment."); J.A. Berthelot (signature on title), born at St. Eustache in 1815, appointed judge in Montreal 1859.

"The first printed account in book form of John Jacob Astor's scheme for a fur trading company with headquarters at the mouth of the Columbia, and the first printed account of the overland journey back from Oregon to the east through Canada" (Streeter sale). Franchère was a member of the Western Fur Company and one of the founders of Fort Astoria. After three years of service he decided to return to the East Coast over land. He followed the Columbia River, crossed the Rockies, reached the Red River Settlement and finally Montreal. The book is an important primary source and served as the basis for Washington Irving's Astoria.
