Engraved title by Mathias Arteaga, letterpress title within woodcut border printed in red and black, 13 engraved plates by Arteaga (comprising 8 full-page or smaller, 4 folding and one folding chart of the eastern North Atlantic), 2 folding tables, woodcuts in text, that on 3M2r with volvelle. (2Q reinforced along gutter margin, small marginal repair on 3H1-2, 4I1, last leaf with lower margin renewed, with several letters and rule border supplied in printed facsimile.) 19th-century Spanish mottled calf, smooth spine gilt, brown morocco lettering piece (covers restored); blue cloth folding case. Provenance: D. Francisco de Paula, Manxon y Miconi (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION of this scarce navigational work, based in part of Blondel de Saint-Aubin's Le veritable art de naviger par le quartier de reduction (1671). The tables at end include latitudes and longitudes for American locales. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, only one copy has sold in the last 30 years: Sotheby's London, 30 November 1995, lot 158. Alden & Landis 692/77; Crone 335; Palau 100974.
