MONTANARI, Geminiano (1633-1687). L'astrologio convinta dif also col mezzo di nuove esperienze, e ragioni fisico-astronomiche, ó sia la caccia del frugnuolo. Venice: F. Nicolini, 1685.
4o (212 x 143 mm). Engraved portrait. (Pp.129-132 misbound, small marginal paper flaw on C3 touching a few letters.) Contemporary vellum over pasteboard (covers slightly bowed).
FIRST EDITION of this summary of Montanari's battles against astrology, which aroused great interest and brought about the banning of the subject from universities. In this work, "instead of merely fulminating against astrology or repeating old arguments, [Montanari] attempted to show its falsity by experiments as well. His book is furthermore written in a sober, dispassionate and impartial manner which accords well with experimental science" (Thorndike VIII, p.342). Montanari was professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna and was a principle mover in the flowering of science in that city at the beginning of the 18th century. Riccardi II:175.
