3 parts in one volume, 4o (227 x 159 mm). 64 engraved double-page maps mounted on guards, comprising 27 maps of the ancient world and 37 maps of the modern world, letterpress text on rectos, woodcut diagrams, printer's devices on titles and at end of part 2, woodcut initials. (Gatherings X and Y in first part transposed, a few leaves trimmed, some minor marginal worming to guards affecting 10 maps.) Contemporary limp vellum, leather ties (two missing).
GIROLAMO RUSCELLI'S TRANSLATION. A new translation into Italian; most of the maps are enlarged copies of the Gastaldi maps from the Venice 1548 edition, with some exceptions: among the 37 "modern world" maps in this edition is the twin hemisphere world map, which is, according to Shirley, the earliest of its kind to appear in an atlas. Other maps not found in Gastaldi's edition are: Scandinavia (after Jacob Ziegler, 1532); Brasil (after Ramusio); the Arctic regions; South Africa; and a navigational chart of the World (Shirley 111).
