FIRST EDITION. A TALL, FINE SET OF ULLOA AND JUAN'S IMPORTANT SOUTH AMERICAN VOYAGE, the most comprehensive 18th-century account of that continent. Based on ten years travel and observation by two of Europe's best scientists, Ulloa and Juan's book remains a cornerstone of South American exploration, and has become scarce. According to American Book Prices Current, the last copy of this first edition in Spanish was sold at Sotheby's New York, 26 June 1997, lot 374.

The King of Spain granted permission to the French Academy of Sciences to send an expedition under the leadership of Charles-Marie de la Condamine to the equinoctial regions of Spanish South America in order to measure the dimension and shape of the earth. As part of the Crown's agreement to cross Spanish territory, Ulloa and Juan y Santacilla accompanied the expedition. Juan wrote the text relating to scientific observations and Ulloa compiled the history of the expedition. The work also contains a description of the 1745 siege of Louisbourg, and the Newfoundland cod fishing industry. The plates are city views of Cartagena, Quito, Lima, and others, scenes of Inca civilization and scientific instruments used on the expedition. Hill 1739; Hogwego U3; Sabin 36811 & 36808; Palau 125471-2. (3)
