A GENTLEMAN'S OVERSIZED 18K GOLD WRISTWATCH, BY PIAGET, RETAILED BY CARTIER
With Cal. Beta 21 electroquartz movement, 13 jewels, the gilt dial with black Roman numerals and gold hands, within a large rectangular monogrammed case with a triple stepped bezel, the back secured by four screws, with intregrated 18k gold Piaget bracelet and clasp, (back case inscribed V.T.C. 2-22-74), circa 1971, 9 ins.

Provenance

This wristwatch is believed to have been previously owned by Roy Marcus Cohn (1927-1986), an American lawyer who played a prominent role, alongside Senator Joseph McCarthy, in the investigations of alleged Communists in the United States government. During his 30-year career as a high-powered lawyer in New York, he represented Donald Trump, mafia figures Tony Salerno and John Gotti, Studio 54 owners Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager and the Archdiocese of New York. A highly controversial figure, he wielded tremendous political power at times. When the current owner purchased the wristwatch Roy Cohn's initials appeared on the case but have since been re-engraved with the initials V.T.C

Lot Essay

The Beta-21 caliber was developed by a consortium of watch companies at the Swiss Electronic Research center or CEH (Centre Electronique Horloger) in Neuchâtel. It was the first quartz movement for wristwatches with analog display.
